The Ramsay Family

In Finland there are two noble families the Noble No 17 and the Barons No 40 right.

Our family came to Finland (then part of Sweden) in 1577. The first Ramsay,Joan, belonged to the Dalhousie Ramsay Family in Scotland. First the Ramsays were officers fighting for Sweden in the Baltic countries and at that time family members were moving with the soldiers. As the Swedish King could not pay the Ramsays in cash, they got land in Finland as compensation for fighting.

Click here if you want to see the connection to Dalhousie . The exact connection of Joan (John? or Hans) is not clear, but he had an introduction letter (1628) to the Swedish Noble House from Brechin and his two sons studied at Oxford. Hans Ramsays father was Capt. alexander Ramsay b.abt  1520  mentioned in Balmabrech (3 miles from Brechin) and his granfather Willliam Ramsay b. abt. 1476 and married to Janet Lindsay.
